Young Nature Explorers Begin Their Journey : TIES Introduces 8th Batch of Junior Naturalists

2026-04-20

The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) has launched the eighth edition of its Junior Naturalist Certificate Course (JNC), marking the commencement of a 15-day immersive journey into nature learning and conservation awareness. The programme was officially inaugurated by Dr. G. Prasad, DCF, Forest and Wildlife Department, setting the tone for an engaging and educational experience for a group of enthusiastic young participants.

The Junior Naturalist Certificate Course is a flagship initiative of TIES, designed to cultivate a deep-rooted appreciation for the natural world among children. Through structured nature studies and experiential learning, the programme enables participants to develop a meaningful understanding of biodiversity, ecosystems, and the urgent need for conservation. It also equips them with essential knowledge and practical skills to become responsible stewards of the environment.

The opening day featured a series of interactive ice-breaking sessions led by Mr. Lal Varghese, National Trainer, Jaycees,  fostering teamwork and active participation among the students. This was followed by an insightful session on biodiversity conservation delivered by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIE,  who emphasized the interconnectedness of life forms and the critical role each species plays in maintaining ecological balance.

Over the course of the programme, which concludes on May 9, participants will explore diverse aspects of flora and fauna through hands-on learning experiences. The curriculum includes guided field walks through the scenic hills of Vagamon and along the shores of Vembanad Lake, wildlife surveys, and an immersive camping experience at Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. These activities are designed to provide real-world exposure to ecological systems and biodiversity.

By integrating academic knowledge with outdoor exploration, the Junior Naturalist Certificate Course continues to inspire and empower the next generation of nature enthusiasts and conservation advocates.
