Wings of Awareness: Exploring Birds and Beyond at SKM High School

2025-09-23

The Wings of Awareness project, implemented by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) ) conceived and supported by Buimerc India Foundation,is an amateur bird watching and nature learning initiative designed to cultivate environmental awareness among school students. The project encourages children to appreciate the diversity of birds, to engage in experiential learning, and to foster a lifelong connection with the natural world. The project will be implemented across 20 schools in Kottayam District, engaging around 1,000 students and 60 teachers.

Ms. Praseedha P.R., teacher coordinator of the programme, extended a warm welcome to the gathering and explained the importance of such initiatives in building ecological responsibility among young learners. The inaugural address was delivered by Sri A.K. Jayaprakash, Manager of SKMHSS, who praised the effort of TIES and Buimerc India Foundation in bringing such a meaningful project to schools. This was followed by the presidential address from Smt. Jayasree V.S., Headmistress (in charge), who expressed her gratitude to the organizers and encouraged students to utilize the opportunity to learn and explore.

After these formal openings, an introductory session was conducted by Dr. Punnen Kurian ( Director of TIES) in which the vision, goals, and significance of Wings of Awareness were clearly outlined. The students were made aware of how the project combines learning, observation, and scientific practice to promote both knowledge and conservation ethics. A baseline survey session was then carried out among the participants to understand their initial awareness and interests, providing valuable input for designing upcoming activities.

The highlight of the programme was a comprehensive class on birds and bird watching led by Mr. Sarath Babu, Nature Education Officer of TIES. Through engaging examples and interactive explanations, he introduced students to the fascinating world of birds, their unique features, identification techniques, and the ethics of bird watching.

Following this, Ms. Suhaana, Project Officer of Wings of Awareness, conducted a session on the use of the CROW(Children's Resources for Ornithology and Wilderness) app, a digital platform specially developed for the project. She explained how the application enables students to record and share bird sightings, thereby turning their observations into valuable contributions for citizen science. Her practical demonstration gave students hands-on exposure to the app, making them familiar with its features and potential.

The orientation session at S.K.M School, Kumarakom, proved to be an inspiring beginning to the Wings of Awareness journey for the institution. The active involvement of students, wholehearted support of the teachers, and expert guidance from the TIES team created a vibrant and motivating atmosphere. The event not only laid the foundation for bird watching activities in the school but also encouraged students to nurture a lasting relationship with nature.
