Wildflower Show at Naalumanikkaattu: Reviving Heritage, Conserving Biodiversity

2025-09-13

Heritage conservation and the protection of native flora are deeply intertwined with the survival of local fauna and the preservation of biodiversity. Recognizing this vital connection, a vibrant wildflower show was hosted at Naalumanikkaattu to showcase the richness of Kerala’s native plants. The exhibition in its fifth edition, featured wild flowers, fruits, and indigenous species, created a unique platform to celebrate local biodiversity, revive traditional knowledge, and highlight the importance of conserving native flora as a foundation for sustaining local ecosystems and wildlife.

The event, aptly held at Naalumanikkattu (“Evening Breeze”), which was once a waste dumping area now transformed into a community leisure space, stood as a testament to the community’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards. It was officially inaugurated by Adv. Chandy Oommen, MLA, while the session was presided over by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES.

The exhibition masterfully highlighted the ecological, cultural, and nutritional value of native species, aiming to instill a deep-seated sense of conservation in young minds. Students from St. Joseph's CGHS, Kottayam, exhibited a vivid variety of plants, flowers, and tubers collected from their backyard. The school’s faculty underscored the critical importance of preserving the state’s natural resources for future generations. The wildflower show is part of a larger, ongoing initiative to document and appreciate Kerala’s diverse flora, bringing students face-to-face with nature.

The successful program was coordinated by a dedicated team of staff, including Lialias Lidiya, Bismi Martin, and Hayes V. Byju from St. Joseph's CGHS, and Abhirami K. P., Jijomon P. P., and Anoopa Mathews from TIES.

The programme was conducted by Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences in association with MEB Residents Association, Manarcad.
