"As part of the 'Wings of Awareness' project by TIES and Buimerc India Foundation, we students of ABM GUPS Kumarakom conducted a birdwatching session around our school's surroundings," shared Devika Dhaneesh, a 6th-standard student. Reflecting on the day, she added, "Through this birdwatching session, we received detailed explanations about each bird, making it a very interesting, scientific, and unforgettable experience."
This immersive field study brought together 45 students to explore the rich wetland ecosystems and areas surrounding the renowned Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Expert ornithologist Ajayakumar M. N. led the young observers through the riparian landscapes, providing deep insights into migratory and resident bird behaviors, identification markers, and ecological roles.
To integrate digital tools into wildlife conservation, TIES Project Officer Arathi Sasidharan conducted a hands-on demonstration of the CROW App. Students learned how to record real-time field observations and log species sightings digitally, stepping into the role of active student citizen scientists supporting regional environmental documentation.
The field exploration proved exceptionally rewarding, allowing the young participants to observe and catalog diverse avian species thriving in the wetland margins near the sanctuary.
The educational excursion was successfully coordinated with the dedicated support of accompanying teacher Daris, who managed student groups and field logistics. By bridging classroom lessons with direct outdoor exploration, the initiative deeply inspired the students to cherish and protect their unique local wetland heritage.
