St. Antony’s Higher Secondary School, Plassanal hosted the orientation class for the Wings of Awareness project, a nature education initiative implemented by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and supported by the Buimerc India Foundation.

Now entering its second phase following a highly successful first phase that also engaged 20 schools, "Wings of Awareness" is an environmental leadership initiative designed to provide students with a hands-on environmental education experience at zero cost to participating institutions. The program equips students to become ambassadors for conservation by providing essential learning materials, expert-led training sessions, field guides, naturalist diaries, guided expeditions, and access to the CROW observation app. In this second phase, the initiative is being rolled out across another 20 schools in Kottayam District, aiming to reach approximately 1,000 students and 60 teachers.

The official proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Headmaster Mr. Jameskutty Kurian, who highlighted the significance of experiential learning and environmental awareness alongside academic education. The program was formally inaugurated by Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) President Mr. Bijo Mathew.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, gave a comprehensive overview of the project, outlining its core vision and philosophy. He emphasized how regular observation of nature fosters patience, focus, and curiosity while instilling a strong sense of environmental stewardship among students.

Following the inaugural addresses, a baseline survey was conducted to assess the students' initial awareness levels regarding local biodiversity. The main session of the orientation was led by Ornithologist Mr. Sarath Babu, Nature Education Officer and Project Coordinator at TIES. He detailed the taxonomic aspects of bird identification, avian ecology, and practical bird identification tips, while also educating students on ethical field practices. The students actively participated in the interactive session.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Simi Joseph. The overall program was coordinated by TIES Project Officer Arathi Sasidharan.
