Training on Ornamental Fish Culture for Aspiring Students from Excelsior English School, Illickal

2025-10-27

Siddarth Rajeev, a 7th-grade student of Excelsior English School, Illickal, is eagerly waiting to set up his own aquarium, inspired by a special training programme on ornamental fish culture. Along with him, 46 students took part in this hands-on learning experience, gaining practical knowledge and skills for sustainable living.

The training was organized under the Enjoy Learning Skills Programme of the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), an interactive learning initiative designed for students to observe, learn, and connect with nature. The sessions were led by Mr. C.K. Rajan, retired Deputy Director of Fisheries, and covered topics such as the diversity of ornamental fish, breeding methods, nutrition, and aquarium setup. Forty-six students and two teachers participated in the interactive sessions.

A live demonstration on aquarium setup using pebbles, plants, filters, and other essentials was conducted, along with an introduction to various ornamental fish species. The use of pH paper for testing water quality was also demonstrated.

The programme supports TIES’ mission to promote practical learning and awareness about environmental conservation. By introducing students to ornamental fish culture, the training helped develop technical knowledge and encouraged responsibility toward sustainability.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, distributed certificates to the participants. The training was coordinated by Ms. Simi Joseph and Ms. Saramma Mathew from Excelsior English School, along with Mr. Sarath Babu N.B., Ms. Arya Shaji, Mr. Jijomon P.P., and Ms. Megha M.M. from TIES. Each student and teacher received a bowl and a fish, helping them apply what they learned and fostering care for living organisms.
