On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the NSS volunteers of VHSE, 7th Mile, Pampady were inspired into action through an engaging and thought-provoking session led by Dr. Punnen Kurian, renowned environmentalist and Director of the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES).
The session, aligned with this year’s global theme—"Our Land. Our Future. Beat Plastic Pollution"—focused on the urgent need to eliminate plastic waste and work towards restoring ecological balance. Dr. Kurian captivated the young audience with real-life stories from the conservation field and insights drawn from decades of grassroots ecological work. He highlighted the widespread damage caused by plastic pollution to biodiversity, water bodies, and soil health, urging the volunteers to take the lead as environmental stewards within their communities.
Beyond being a lecture, the session served as a powerful call to action. Dr. Kurian encouraged the students to initiate organic farming practices and promote sustainable lifestyle changes, starting at the local level.
The program also featured a campus visit, where students were introduced to eco-friendly construction practices exemplified by the Lawrie Baker model, innovative waste management techniques, and other sustainable systems showcased at the TIES campus.
As the session concluded, it left a lasting impact on the volunteers—a compelling reminder that even small, consistent steps can contribute to building a cleaner, greener future.
