The Valedictory Function of the Wings of Awareness project was conducted at St. Joseph Convent Girls High School, marking the successful completion of the programme in the school. The event served as a platform to celebrate student achievements and acknowledge the collaborative efforts of the school and the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES).

The programme commenced with a silent prayer, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. This was followed by a warm welcome address delivered by the Headmistress, Smt. Suminamol K. John. In her address, she extended heartfelt greetings to the TIES team members present: Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES; Sarath Babu, Nature Education Officer; Ajaya Kumar M.N, Bird Watching Expert; and Suhaana, Project Officer of Wings of Awareness. She appreciated the institute’s sustained efforts in fostering environmental awareness among students.

The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Punnen Kurian, who emphasized the importance of environmental literacy and experiential learning in shaping responsible citizens. He highlighted how structured nature education programmes can instill scientific curiosity, observational skills, and ecological sensitivity among young learners.

Following the inaugural address, Sarath Babu formally handed over the School Memento and the School-Level Project Report to the Headmistress, symbolizing the successful implementation of the project within the institution.

The distribution of certificates to the top-performing students was carried out by Ajaya Kumar M.N. The recognition was based on students’ active participation, bird observation records, and overall engagement throughout the programme. Selected students shared brief reflections on their experiences, expressing how Wings of Awareness enhanced their understanding of biodiversity, improved their observational skills, and deepened their appreciation for nature.

Subsequently, certificates of appreciation were presented to the teachers by Dr. Punnen Kurian in recognition of their guidance, coordination, and consistent support in executing the project activities at the school level.

Ajaya Kumar M.N. then addressed the gathering, underscoring the need for students to build a meaningful connection with nature. He elaborated on how direct engagement with natural ecosystems fosters environmental responsibility and contributes to holistic development.

The Project Officer, Suhaana, was then invited to speak. In her address, she congratulated the top-performing students and specifically acknowledged the individual achievements of the best performers. She expressed sincere gratitude to the school management, teachers, and students for their cooperation and commitment, which significantly contributed to the success of the programme.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Teacher Mary Lima, who acknowledged the efforts of the TIES team, the school administration, faculty members, and students in making the Wings of Awareness initiative a meaningful and impactful endeavour.

The Valedictory Function successfully marked the culmination of the programme, reinforcing the importance of sustained environmental education and collaborative partnerships between institutions.
