2025-07-31

“The ecology we learned here was far more enriching and different from what we study in classrooms,” reflected Mr. Muneer from the Department of Psychology, Saintgits College of Applied Sciences, Kottayam, after participating in Enjoy Learning—a one-day field and lab-based educational program organized by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES).

The program was designed to enhance students’ understanding of biodiversity conservation and foster an eco-conscious mindset. Through a blend of interactive sessions and hands-on activities, participants gained practical insights into sustainable living and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, led a compelling session titled Eco-Friendly Lifestyle: Sustainable Solutions to Environmental Issues. Aimed at empowering future educators, his talk emphasized the need for environmentally responsible behaviors and highlighted the urgency of conserving ecosystems amidst rising human pressures.

Following the session, students embarked on a guided nature walk across the TIES campus, where they explored real-life examples of sustainable practices and eco-conscious architectural designs. The walk emphasized the ecological importance of native species in maintaining environmental balance. Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer at TIES, introduced students to apiculture, detailing their ecological significance and potential as a sustainable livelihood option.

The programme concluded with a tour of the TIES green campus, led by Ms. Anoopa Mathews, PRO of TIES. Students explored the institute’s low-cost, energy-efficient infrastructure and learned about practical home composting methods—equipping them with tools to apply sustainability in daily life.

The program was coordinated by Ms. Annjala Moni Mathews, Faculty, Department of Psychology, Saintgits College of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Mr. Jijomon P. P., Ms. Christeena Babu, and Ms. Saranyamol Sivarajan from TIES. A total of 20 students from the Department of Psychology, Saintgits College of Applied Sciences, Kottayam actively participated in the initiative.
