2025-07-18

An intensive Research Methodology Workshop was recently organized at the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), Velloor, bringing together 63 final-year Life Science students from seven leading colleges across Kerala—St. Thomas College, Ranni; UC College, Aluva; BCM College, Kottayam; Baselius College, Kottayam; St. Thomas College, Pala; M.A. College, Kothamangalam; and Newman College, Thodupuzha.

The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Head of Environmental History and Anthropocene Studies, whose insightful keynote address emphasized the evolving nature of scientific research and the critical importance of methodological rigor.

The technical sessions were led by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES. The workshop was designed to equip students with essential research skills in preparation for their dissertation work. Topics covered included research design, data collection methods, scientific writing, and data analysis, with a strong focus on research ethics and scientific integrity.

A major highlight of the training was a hands-on session on quadrat sampling, a core ecological technique used in biodiversity and population studies. This practical exercise allowed students to connect classroom theory with field-based research, enhancing their understanding of ecological methods and reinforcing the importance of direct observation and data collection in life sciences.

The workshop was well-received by all participants and served as a strong foundation for their academic research journeys. The program underscored the shared commitment of TIES and the participating institutions to promoting scientific inquiry and excellence in education.

The training was smoothly coordinated by Sarath Babu N.B., Jijomon P.P., and Christeena, whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.
