Research Foundations: Training for students of UC College, MG University, CMS College, and Newman College

2025-09-18

An intensive Research Methodology Workshop was recently conducted at the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), Velloor, bringing together 64 final-year Life Science students from leading colleges in Kerala—UC College, Aluva; CMS College, Kottayam; MG University, Kottayam; and Newman College, Thodupuzha.

The technical sessions, led by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, were designed to equip students with essential research skills in preparation for their dissertation work. The workshop addressed key aspects of research such as study design, data collection methods, scientific writing, and data analysis, with a strong emphasis on research ethics and scientific integrity.

A major highlight of the program was a hands-on session on quadrat sampling, a fundamental ecological technique widely used in biodiversity and population studies. This practical exposure enabled students to bridge classroom theory with field-based applications, deepening their understanding of ecological research methods and the importance of direct observation in life sciences.

The workshop was well-received by all participants, providing a strong foundation for their academic research journeys. It also underscored the shared commitment of TIES and the participating institutions to nurturing scientific inquiry and promoting excellence in education.

The training was effectively coordinated by Dr. Souji S. and Alison Shaji Jacob from Newman College, Thodupuzha, along with Aparna Raj, Megha M. M., Anoopa Mathews, and Jijomon P. P. from TIES, whose dedicated efforts contributed greatly to the success of the event.
