Nurturing Resilience:Training on Sustainable Practices for Social Work Students of Marian College, Kuttikanam

A one-day training programme on sustainable practices was organised for the students of Marian College, Kuttikanam, through a collaborative initiative between the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and the School of Social Work, Marian College. The programme aimed to equip students and faculty with practical knowledge and skills to encourage sustainability in their everyday lives and within their communities.

The training brought together enthusiastic postgraduate students from the Department of Social Work, who actively participated in a series of interactive sessions, field walks, and group discussions facilitated by experts from TIES. Key themes addressed during the programme included biodiversity conservation, eco-friendly architecture, waste management, water conservation, and environmental administration. The sessions highlighted the significance of adopting environmentally responsible practices to address current ecological challenges and work towards a greener future.

A major highlight of the programme was the practical demonstration of students’ perspectives on sustainability-related themes and waste-to-resource initiatives. This hands-on component provided participants with valuable firsthand experience in implementing sustainable solutions. Students also interacted closely with subject matter experts, gaining insights into the real-world application of sustainability principles.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, addressed the participants and emphasised the crucial role of youth in driving positive environmental change. He highlighted the importance of nature-based education and experiential learning in fostering a deeper understanding of ecological issues. Field walks were led by Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer, TIES, focusing on biodiversity conservation, eco-friendly architecture, waste management, and sustainable practices. In another session, Ms. Anju, Lab In-charge,TIES, introduced students to the laboratory facilities and scientific instruments available at TIES.

The programme concluded with a feedback session, during which students expressed their appreciation for the learning opportunity and committed to taking meaningful steps towards sustainability in their personal and academic pursuits. Dr. Hari R. S., Assistant Professor and Director, School of Social Work, Marian College, highlighted the relevance of the sessions for students. On behalf of the participants, student representative Ms. Maria conveyed her gratitude to TIES and thanked the team for the informative and engaging sessions.

The training programme was coordinated by Jijomon P. P., Megha M. M., and Surya S. K.,  from TIES. A total of 25 students took part in the programme.

TIES continues to remain dedicated to empowering future generations through impactful training programmes and strategic partnerships. The collaboration with Marian College, Kuttikanam, marks a significant step towards building a community that actively values and practices sustainability.
