The TIES campus is remarkably eco-friendly, and the cool atmosphere here truly reflects its green environment. The class by Dr. Punnen Kurian Sir was highly relevant and deeply informative,” shared Maria Biju, a student from Tribal Arts College, Nadukani, Idukki, after participating in Enjoy Learning—a one-day field- and lab-based educational program organized by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES).

The program aimed to enhance students’ understanding of biodiversity conservation and foster an eco-conscious mindset. Through a blend of interactive sessions and hands-on activities, participants gained valuable insights into sustainable living and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, led an engaging and thought-provoking session that inspired students to reflect on the importance of sustainable living. His talk focused on empowering future educators to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours and emphasized the urgency of conserving ecosystems amid growing human pressures.

Following the session, students embarked on a guided nature walk across the TIES campus, exploring real-life examples of sustainable practices and eco-conscious architectural designs. The walk highlighted the ecological importance of native species in maintaining environmental balance. Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer at TIES, introduced students to apiculture, explaining its ecological significance and potential as a sustainable livelihood.

The program also featured a visit to the TIES mushroom farm, where Ms. Arya Shaji, Project Assistant at TIES, provided practical insights into mushroom cultivation. She demonstrated an eco-friendly technique using pellets for mushroom preparation, offering students real-time learning experiences.

The day concluded with a visit to the TIES Laboratory, where Ms. Anju, Lab In-Charge, introduced students to the various laboratory services and scientific instruments available at TIES.

The program was successfully coordinated by Dr. Ganga T. and Ms. Angel Jasmine M. J., faculty members from Tribal Arts College, Nadukani, Idukki, in collaboration with Mr. Jijomon P. P. and Ms. Megha M. M. from TIES. A total of 20 students from the college actively participated in this enriching educational experience.
