Introduction of Climate-Resilient Paddy Farming Protocol in Thrissur

2024-12-14

In an effort to promote sustainable agriculture and address the challenges posed by climate change, a samithi meeting was organized on 14th December 2024 in Thrissur to introduce the Climate-Resilient Paddy Farming Protocol. The event was conducted in collaboration with Vennippadam Vadakke Bhagam Nellulpadaka Karshaka Samithi, Ponmani Karshaka Sangham, and Kachanipadam Samithi. It brought together key leaders and farmers from the region to explore innovative strategies for adaptive and sustainable rice cultivation practices.

The meeting saw the participation of prominent leaders, including Vennippadam Vadakke Bhagam Nellulpadaka Karshaka Samithi President Rajan, President Janardhanan, Ponmani Karshaka Sangham President Devis Joseph, and Kachanipadam Samithi President M.L. Babu. A total of 25 farmers attended the event, reflecting significant interest in the initiative.

The kole farmers of the Thrissur region, known for cultivating paddy in low-lying wetlands, are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Changes in rainfall patterns, flooding, and increased salinity have significantly affected their productivity. This meeting marked an important step in equipping these farmers with tools and techniques to adapt to these challenges, ensuring the sustainability of rice cultivation in the kole lands while preserving the ecological balance of this unique agro-ecosystem.

The program began with a welcome address by Project Coordinator Habi Sherin, followed by an introductory speech by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, who highlighted the project's objectives and its potential to mitigate climate-related challenges in paddy farming. Habi Sherin then delivered a detailed presentation on the Climate-Resilient Paddy Farming Protocol, explaining its features and practical applications to promote sustainable and adaptive farming practices.

A lively discussion session followed the presentation, where farmers shared their experiences, challenges, and suggestions to refine the protocol. The event was documented by Project Assistant Aditya S, who also provided technical support.

This workshop is part of a NABARD-funded initiative titled “Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Rice Cultivation in Kerala and the Development of Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies”, which aims to develop effective solutions for climate-resilient agriculture in Kerala.
