The seventh edition of the Junior Naturalist Certificate Course (JNC), was officially inaugurated by Mr. Subash K B, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Kottayam Social Forestry Division. The inauguration marked the beginning of a 15-day journey into nature learning and conservation awareness for a group of enthusiastic young participants.
The JNC course is a flagship initiative by TIES aimed at cultivating a deep-rooted appreciation for the natural world among children. Through structured nature studies, the program helps participants develop a meaningful understanding of biodiversity, ecosystems, and the urgent need for conservation. It also equips them with foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to become responsible stewards of the environment.
The opening day featured a series of engaging ice-breaking activities led by Dr. Nelson P Abraham, National Trainer and Vice-President of TIES. This was followed by a compelling session on Biodiversity Conservation, delivered by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, who emphasized the interconnectedness of life forms and the critical role each species plays in maintaining ecological balance.
Over the course of the program, which concludes on May 10, participants will explore various aspects of floral and faunal life. The curriculum includes field walks through the scenic Vagamon hills and along the Vembanad lake shores, wildlife surveys, and an immersive camping experience at the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary — all designed to provide hands-on exposure to real-world ecological systems.
By combining academic insight with outdoor exploration, the Junior Naturalist Certificate Course continues to inspire and empower the next generation of nature lovers and conservation advocates.
