Flocks in the Fields: St. Mary’s UPS Kudamaloor Students Uncover 25 Avian Species at Maniyaparambu

2026-10-13

"Even after living here all these years, I was completely unaware that such a rich variety of birds existed right around us," reflected program Teacher Coordinator Manoj Kumar N, highlighting how the experience energized the students and turned a simple field exposure into a lasting connection with nature. This eye-opening journey took place under "Wings of Awareness"—a joint conservation drive led by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and Buimerc India Foundation.

A group of 47 enthusiastic students journeyed to the picturesque landscapes of Maniyaparambu to undertake a hands-on survey of local wetland and terrestrial bird species. Expert Ornithologist Ajaya Kumara M. N. guided the young observers through the terrain, teaching them key field skills such as spotting hidden birds, interpreting flight patterns, and identifying distinct avian calls.

To integrate technology with environmental field studies, TIES Project Officer Arathi Sasidharan conducted an interactive demonstration of the CROW App. Students received practical training on logging real-time field observations, allowing them to contribute direct sighting data as student citizen scientists for regional conservation mapping.

Exploring the diverse habitat of Maniyaparambu, the team recorded a total of 25 bird species. The highlight of the expedition was observing remarkable avian life up close—filling the young learners with awe and wonder as they encountered key species including: Glossy Ibis, Black-headed Ibis, Green Bee-eater, and Green Sandpiper.

The educational expedition was organized with strong leadership from Headmaster Manoj Joseph. Faculty members Liz Francis and Manoj Kumar N accompanied the students, providing guidance and managing program logistics throughout the outdoor session. By stepping out of the traditional classroom, the initiative successfully ignited a passion for birdwatching and local ecological conservation among the young learners.
