Excelsior School Students Embark on Mushroom Farming Journey

2024-12-12

“I learned how to grow mushrooms. It will be useful for my mother,” shared a student from Excelsior School, Kottayam, reflecting the practical value of their new skills. This student, along with 41 others, participated in a hands-on mushroom farming training program under TIES' "Enjoy Learning Skills" initiative.

Led by Dr. Punnen Kurian and Ms. Arya Shaji of TIES, the program provided students with a thorough understanding of mushroom cultivation. The sessions covered essential topics such as the basics of mushrooms, different types of edible varieties, farming techniques, spawn preparation, and mushroom bed creation. In addition, students gained hands-on experience in preparing oyster mushroom beds, adding a tangible element to their learning experience.

The initiative is deeply aligned with TIES’ mission to equip students with practical skills for sustainable living while fostering environmental awareness. Through the training, participants not only acquired valuable agricultural techniques but also developed an appreciation for ecological conservation and the interconnectedness of human actions with the environment.

The ongoing collaboration between TIES and Excelsior School underscores the importance of nurturing young, environmentally conscious citizens. By empowering students with knowledge and skills, this initiative marks a meaningful step toward cultivating a more sustainable and greener future.

The session was coordinated by Mrs. Saramma Mathew, Mrs. Simi Joseph and Mrs. Ashwini Chandran, faculty members from Excelsior School, alongside Ms. Anoopa Mathews, Ms. Abhirami K.P, Ms. Megha Babu, Ms. Jinsha M, Ms. Aarcha S and Mr. Jijomon P.P. from TIES.
