The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), in collaboration with Bishop Vayalil Memorial Holy Cross College, organised a one-day training programme on sustainable practices for undergraduate students. The initiative was designed to equip students and faculty members with practical knowledge and skills that encourage sustainability in everyday life and within the community.
The programme brought together enthusiastic students from the Departments of Social Work and Commerce, who actively participated in interactive sessions, field walks, and group discussions led by experts from TIES. Major themes covered included biodiversity conservation, eco-friendly architecture, waste management, water conservation, and environmental governance. The sessions emphasised the importance of adopting environmentally responsible practices to address current ecological challenges and to move towards a greener future.
A key highlight of the programme was the practical demonstration and student engagement in sustainability-related activities, including waste-to-resource initiatives. The hands-on component enabled participants to gain first-hand experience in implementing sustainable solutions and to understand the real-world application of sustainability principles through close interaction with subject experts.
Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, addressed the participants and emphasised the crucial role of youth in driving positive environmental change. He underscored the importance of nature-based education and experiential learning in building ecological awareness. Field walks were led by Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer, TIES, focusing on biodiversity, eco-friendly construction concepts, and sustainable practices. Ms. Anju, Lab In-charge, introduced students to the laboratory facilities and scientific instruments available at TIES. Ms. Raimol Thomas, Project Assistant, and Ms. Gopika Gopakumar, Lab Assistant, demonstrated mushroom cultivation techniques and explained the functioning of laboratory equipment.
The programme concluded with a feedback session during which students expressed appreciation for the learning opportunity and their commitment to adopting sustainable practices in their personal and academic activities. Dr. Robin Jose, Head of the Department of Social Work, Bishop Vayalil Memorial Holy Cross College, highlighted the relevance of the programme for students’ academic and professional development.
The training was coordinated by Mr. Atul George Dcruz, Faculty, Bishop Vayalil Memorial Holy Cross College, along with Mr. Jijomon P. P. and Ms. Megha M. M. from TIES. A total of 55 students participated in the programme.
TIES remains committed to empowering future generations through impactful training programmes and strategic partnerships. The collaboration with Bishop Vayalil Memorial Holy Cross College marks another step towards building a community that values and practices sustainability.
