TIES successfully concluded its Junior Naturalist Certificate Course, celebrating the graduation of 19 young naturalists who completed an intensive and engaging training program aimed at nurturing curiosity and fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Throughout the course, participants took part in a series of immersive learning experiences led by experts in ecology, biodiversity, and environmental science. The comprehensive curriculum included interactive lectures, field explorations, biodiversity documentation, conservation activities, and guided treks, all designed to cultivate a scientific mindset, sharpen observational skills, and develop a strong conservation ethic.

The training sessions covered a diverse range of topics, including:

  • Eco-games and environmental awareness activities
  • Biodiversity conservation principles
  • Medicinal plant identification and uses
  • Study of odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), butterflies, and birds
  • Observation of bird nests, freshwater fishes, snakes, and amphibians

The course culminated in a certification ceremony, where Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, praised the passion and commitment demonstrated by the young participants. He emphasized the importance of equipping the next generation to become environmentally responsible citizens. The event was formally inaugurated by Mr. Arun R.S., Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), High Range Circle, Kottayam, who underscored the significance of early ecological education in building a sustainable future.

This certificate course is a vital component of TIES’ broader mission to promote environmental education and grassroots conservation awareness. With these 19 newly certified junior naturalists, TIES continues to build a network of young individuals who are not only informed about nature but are also inspired to serve as ambassadors of ecological change in their communities.

The sessions were led by a dedicated team of resource persons and subject matter experts, whose guidance was instrumental in the success of the program. These included: Dr. Nelson P. Abraham, International Trainer; Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director, TIES; Dr. Shaji C.P., Ichthyologist; Ms. Shibi Moses, Ornithologist; Mr. Ajayakumar M.N., Odonatologist; Mr. Sarth Babu N.B., Nature Education Officer, TIES; and Mr. Nidhi Chand, Project Assistant – Amphibian Project, TIES.

By inspiring these young minds and connecting them with the natural world, TIES reaffirms its commitment to building a future rooted in environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
