The Wings of Awareness project, initiated by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conceived and supported by Buimerc India Foundation, is an innovative educational programme that introduces students to the fascinating world of birds. Through bird watching and field-based learning, the project encourages young learners to connect with nature directly, sharpen their observation skills, and develop patience and focus—qualities that benefit both their academic and personal growth. The project will be implemented across 20 schools in Kottayam District, engaging around 1,000 students and 60 teachers.
An orientation session was conducted at Mattakkara Higher Secondary School to launch the project for its students. The welcome address was delivered by Teacher Sandeep S. Nair, who warmly greeted the gathering and spoke appreciatively about the distinguished guests and the valuable initiative being brought to the school.
The introductory remarks were presented by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, who elaborated on the aims and vision of Wings of Awareness. He explained how experiential learning through bird watching goes beyond classroom study, instilling environmental awareness, curiosity, and responsibility among students.
The inaugural address was delivered by Ms. Dhanya V, Headmistress of the school. In her speech, she congratulated the students selected to participate in this unique programme, reminding them of the rare opportunity they have to understand their surroundings, appreciate nature, and learn about the birdlife around them.
Following this, a baseline survey was conducted with the participants to assess their initial awareness and interest in the subject.
The highlight of the day was a detailed and interactive class on birds and bird watching by Mr. Ajayan Kumar M.V, Ornithology Expert at TIES. He introduced students to techniques of bird identification, the ethics of bird watching, and the joy of observing bird behavior in natural settings. His engaging approach inspired students to view their everyday environment with fresh curiosity and respect.
The orientation class at Mattakkara Higher Secondary School successfully laid the groundwork for the Wings of Awareness journey in the institution. The combination of expert guidance, hands-on resources, and enthusiastic participation created a strong platform for students to continue exploring and learning from the natural world around them.
The programme was coordinated by Sandeep S. Nair, faculty from Mattakkara Higher Secondary School and Aparna Raj ,Intern from TIES.
